Why this journey? A note from our founder
For the traveler short on time but long on curiosity, we created The Sovereign Cluster—the most potent, concentrated version of China’s dynastic history. This is a masterpiece of focus. Our curated journey to the five most influential ancient capitals—Beijing, Xi’an, Luoyang, Kaifeng, and Nanjing—is a deep dive into the heartland where the over thirty great dynasties rose and fell. It is not a “lite” tour. It is the essential story, told through its most magnificent cities.

Your Journey, Day by Day
Day 1: Arrival in the Final Capital (Beijing)
Welcome to Beijing, the magnificent capital that for centuries served as the axis of the celestial empire. Your journey begins upon your arrival at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), where our representative will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel.
The evening is yours to settle in and feel the unique weight of this city, a place where imperial legacy and modern ambition occupy the same physical and spiritual space. For your first evening, the city’s vast culinary universe is yours to command. We recommend an independent adventure into the lively Dongzhimen area, famous for its street known as “Ghost Street” (Guijie, 簋街). Here, under a canopy of glowing red lanterns, you will find a dizzying array of restaurants, many specializing in the bubbling, communal fun of hot pot, a perfect, vibrant introduction to the city’s nightlife. Your guided Sinovistas adventure will officially commence tomorrow morning.

Back in the city, the afternoon shifts from earthly defense to cosmic order. We will explore the vast, silent courtyards of the Temple of Heaven (天坛), an architectural masterpiece where emperors once performed sacred rites to ensure a good harvest. The day concludes with a dive into the city’s beating heart, as we navigate the narrow, vibrant Hutong (胡同) alleyways by rickshaw, catching intimate glimpses of daily life in old Beijing. Tonight, our journey begins with a celebratory Welcome Dinner, where you will taste the city’s most famous culinary art: succulent Peking Duck.

You’ll feel the weight of history as you walk the same stone paths as emperors, tracing a route from the vast outer courtyards of state power to the intricate, garden-filled private sanctums of the imperial family.
From the imperial apex, we journey back to the ancient origin. An afternoon flight takes us from Beijing to Xi’an, the city where the very concept of a unified China was born. Upon arrival, your evening is free to dive into the city’s legendary street food. Let your senses guide you through the bustling, vibrant Muslim Quarter (回民街), where the air is thick with the scent of cumin and grilling meat, to find tantalizing local specialties like roujiamo (a savory meat-stuffed flatbread) or hand-pulled biangbiang noodles.

You will begin by standing in the silent presence of an emperor’s eternal guard at the Terracotta Army (兵马俑), a subterranean world where thousands of life-sized warriors, each with a unique face, have stood ready for battle for two millennia.
From the profound stillness and stern power of the Qin, we pivot centuries forward to the sacred icons of the Tang Dynasty’s golden age. We will gaze upon the elegant Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔), a graceful monument to the Buddhist faith and the city’s role as the terminus of the Silk Road. As dusk falls, we plunge you into a vibrant, modern recreation of that era’s splendor at the neon-lit Great Tang All Day Mall (大唐不夜城). Tonight is for your own culinary adventure; perhaps find a spot for pao mo, a classic Xi’an experience where you crumble bread into a rich lamb broth.

Afterwards, we delve into the region’s staggering history at the magnificent Shaanxi History Museum (陕西博物馆), one of China’s finest. You will see priceless treasures, from Shang dynasty bronzes to vibrant Tang dynasty tomb murals, that bring the story of this ancient capital to life. (Please note: In the event tickets for this high-demand museum are unavailable, we will instead visit the exquisite Xi’an Museum, ensuring a world-class cultural experience). Originally founded in 555 AD, this grand temple has been a major center of Buddhism for centuries and is particularly famous for its history of Buddhist music. Afterwards, we board a high-speed train that whisks us across the country to our final capital: Nanjing (南京). Important Notes
1. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility
While we make every effort to adhere to the published itinerary, travel in China can sometimes be unpredictable. Flight schedules may change, and site visiting hours can be altered with little notice. Your guide may occasionally need to adjust the sequence of activities to provide the best possible experience. We thank you in advance for your flexibility and adventurous spirit.
2. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.
-
Payments: China operates on a near-cashless system driven by two main apps: WeChat Pay and Alipay. For convenience and true local immersion, we strongly recommend installing at least one of these apps on your phone and linking your credit card before your departure. Relying solely on cash or foreign credit cards for daily purchases can be very difficult.
-
Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms (like Facebook, Instagram, and X) and websites (like Google and YouTube) is restricted in mainland China. Many travelers choose to install a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on their phones and devices before they travel to stay connected as they would at home.
3. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all high-speed train and internal flight tickets in China are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure. This allows us to secure all necessary tickets on your behalf. Please be aware that any amendments to these details after tickets have been issued may require their re-purchase at your own cost.
4. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided in your pre-departure packet. Please be mindful of security restrictions for train and air travel within China. Items such as pocket knives, aerosols over a certain limit, and large power banks are often prohibited. When in doubt, we recommend packing such items in your checked luggage.
5. Cultural Immersion & Cuisine
This journey is designed to be an authentic cultural immersion. This includes the food. We will dine at a mix of high-quality restaurants and clean, beloved local eateries. While we can cater to most dietary restrictions (e.g., vegetarian, gluten-free) with advance notice, please be aware that options may be limited in more remote areas. We encourage you to be open-minded and adventurous with your palate!
6. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.
7. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
