The Legacy of Silk & Stone

Why this journey? A note from our founder

The Silk Road was never just a road; it was a dialogue between two materials: silk and stoneSilk was the prize—the thread of culture and faith. Stone was the path—the unforgiving desert, the mountain carved into a sanctuary, and the Great Wall that made it possible. We created this journey as an expedition through that dialogue, from the imperial power that guarded the trail to the desert oases where ideas converged.

Signature Experiences on This Path

  • Imperial Power, Buddhist Devotion
From the imperial might of the Terracotta Army to the spiritual devotion of the Mogao Grottoes, this journey contrasts two of China’s most powerful human creations.

  • A Landscape Painted By The Gods
At the Danxia Geopark in Zhangye, we time our visit for sunset, watching as the “Rainbow Mountains” ignite into a breathtaking canvas of surreal, vibrant color.

  • The End of The Great Wall
Stand at the “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven” in Jiayuguan, the legendary western end of the Ming Great Wall. Here, you feel the desolation and strategic weight of an empire’s final frontier.

Your Journey, Day by Day

A stunning night view of the illuminated Bell Tower in Xi'an, showcasing vibrant urban life.
Day 1: Arrival at the Imperial Origin (Xi’an)

Welcome to Xi’an, the ancient capital that for centuries was not the end of China, but the beginning of the world. As the origin of the Silk Road, its streets have hummed with the energy of distant cultures for over a thousand years. Upon your arrival at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY), your Sinovistas Guide will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel.

For your first evening, we recommend diving directly into this legacy. Take an independent walk to the magnificent, beautifully illuminated Drum Tower (鼓楼) and Bell Tower (钟楼), grand structures that once marked the rhythm of the ancient city. From there, it is a short stroll into the heart of the vibrant Muslim Quarter (回民街). Here, the air is thick with the scent of cumin and grilling meat from countless food stalls. It is a powerful first immersion into the city’s living, breathing history, and the perfect place to find a delicious local dinner on your own.

Day 2: A Whirlwind Immersion (Xi’an)

Today is a rich, packed immersion into the legacy of the region. You will stand in the silent, awe-inspiring presence of the Terracotta Army (兵马俑), a subterranean world where thousands of life-sized warriors, each with a unique face, have stood guard for two millennia. Afterwards, at a local artisan’s studio, you will try your own hand at history with a warrior-making workshop, creating a miniature version of the soldiers you just witnessed.

We then connect with the spirit of the Tang Dynasty, gazing upon the elegant Giant Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔), a graceful monument built to house the Buddhist scriptures brought back from India along the Silk Road. The day culminates in the vibrant, neon-lit spectacle of the Great Tang All Day Mall (大唐不夜城). As evening falls, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner. To celebrate the start of our journey on the Silk Road, we will indulge in a signature Xi’an Dumpling Feast (饺子宴). You will sample a dazzling variety of intricately folded dumplings, each with a unique and delicious filling—a perfect and festive beginning to our shared adventure.

西安城墙
Day 3: Ramparts of Empire & The Journey West  (Xi’an/Lanzhou)

Our final morning in the ancient capital is a journey through its living history. We begin by ascending the colossal Ming Dynasty City Wall (明城墙), where you can walk or cycle its ramparts for a breathtaking panoramic view of the ancient city within. From the quiet grandeur of the wall, we plunge into the vibrant, sensory heart of the city: the bustling Muslim Quarter (回民街). Its narrow lanes are a feast for the senses, thick with the scent of spices and grilling meat.

In the afternoon, a high-speed train takes us on the first leg of our westward journey, tracing the path of ancient merchants to Lanzhou (兰州), the historic gateway to the Hexi Corridor. Upon arrival, your evening is free to get a first taste of the city. For dinner, you might seek out a local eatery for a simple, comforting meal and a taste of the city’s famous carved-gourd tea/三炮台 (sān pàotái).

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Lanzhou

黄河铁桥
Day 4: A Flying Horse & The Iron Bridge ( Lanzhou/Zhangye)

Today we explore the city that for centuries served as the first major stop on the Silk Road. We begin at the superb Gansu Provincial Museum (甘肃省博物馆), home to one of the most iconic treasures of the entire route: the magnificent bronze “Flying Horse of Gansu,” a perfect symbol for our adventure. We then take a stroll to the historic Yellow River Iron Bridge (黄河铁桥), the first permanent bridge over this mighty river, offering a tangible connection to the region’s modern history.

In the afternoon, our journey continues by high-speed train along the historic Hexi Corridor to the oasis city of Zhangye (张掖). For dinner tonight, your evening is free. Your guide can recommend a local restaurant to try some hearty Hexi Corridor cuisine, such as a savory stir-fried noodle dish, a perfect meal after a day of travel.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Zhangye

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

张掖丹霞2
Day 5: A Colossal Buddha & A Painted Landscape ( Zhangye)

Today is a day of immense scale and surreal color, all within the environs of the oasis city of Zhangye. Our exploration begins with a visit to the serene, colossal reclining Buddha at the Giant Buddha Temple (大佛寺). You will stand in the quiet presence of one of the largest indoor clay buddhas in Asia, a magnificent testament to the faith that flourished along this ancient route.

After a relaxing lunch, we prepare for the day’s spectacular finale. We journey to the Zhangye Danxia Geopark (张掖丹霞地质公园). We will time our visit perfectly, entering the park in the late afternoon and staying for the golden hour. You will wander through the viewpoints, watching as the low, warm light of the setting sun ignites the “Rainbow Mountains,” transforming the landscape into a breathtaking, almost unbelievable canvas of deep reds, vibrant yellows, and rich greens.

After sunset, we return to our hotel in Zhangye. Tonight, your evening is free to find a local restaurant and perhaps try another of the region’s hearty specialties, like a flavorful plate of lamb ribs.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Zhangye

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

嘉峪关2
Day 6: The Last Bastion of the Empire (Zhangye/Yumen)

Today is a deep dive into the military history of the frontier. After leaving Zhangye, our private vehicle takes us to Jiayuguan (嘉峪关), the legendary “First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven.” Here, you will feel the immense desolation and strategic importance of an empire’s final frontier as we explore the magnificent, restored Jiayuguan Fort (嘉峪关关城), the westernmost fortress of the Ming Great Wall. We will then visit the lonely First Beacon Tower (长城第一墩), the very first watchtower of the Great Wall, perched dramatically on a cliff above the Taolai River.

As dusk begins to fall, we continue our journey west, pressing further into the Gobi Desert to the gritty, authentic frontier oil town of Yumen (玉门). Tonight, we embrace the local experience. Your evening is free to find a simple, hearty dinner at a local restaurant, where you’ll dine alongside workers and travelers on this remote but vital artery of modern China.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Yumen

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

鸣沙山月牙泉
Day 7: The Singing Sands (Yumen/Dunhuang)

Our journey continues as we drive from the frontier town of Yumen to the legendary oasis of Dunhuang (敦煌), a vital crossroads of culture, religion, and trade on the ancient Silk Road. Upon arrival and after checking in, our first stop is the superb Dunhuang Museum (敦煌博物馆). Here, we will see priceless manuscripts, intricate silk paintings, and other artifacts retrieved from the nearby “Library Cave” at Mogao, giving us crucial context for the masterpieces we will witness tomorrow.

In the late afternoon, we experience the magic of the desert at the Mingsha Shan (鸣沙山, “Singing Sand Dunes”). You’ll feel the rhythmic sway of a camel as it carries you over the crest of a massive, golden dune to witness the beautiful and mysterious Crescent Lake (月牙泉), a pristine, crescent-shaped oasis cradled by a sea of sand that has miraculously never been buried. Tonight, we encourage you to explore the lively Shazhou Night Market (沙州夜市), sampling local snacks like savory “yellow noodles” and perhaps trying the famous, refreshing local apricot peel water (xing pi shui).

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Dunhuang

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

莫高窟
Day 8: A Library of Faith & The Journey On (Dunhuang/Turpan)

A monumental day begins at the Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟), a sanctuary of art and a breathtaking gallery of Buddhist faith carved into a desert cliffside. Having already learned their history, you can now fully immerse yourself in the experience, stepping into dimly lit caves to see stunning, thousand-year-old murals come to life before your eyes. After this profound artistic immersion, we experience the modern Silk Road, boarding a high-speed train that rockets us across the vast Gobi Desert into a new province and culture.

For dinner tonight, your evening is free to continue your exploration of Uyghur cuisine. This is a wonderful opportunity to seek out another local specialty: Polo (抓饭, zhuā fàn). Imagine fragrant rice, slow-cooked in a savory broth with tender chunks of lamb, sweet carrots, and raisins until every grain is infused with flavor. It is a hearty, delicious, and deeply satisfying dish that is a cornerstone of every celebration and family meal in Xinjiang.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Turpan

苏公塔
Day 9: The Ingenuity of the Oasis (Turpan)

Today we explore the genius of survival in the Turpan Depression. We begin at the ancient city of Jiaohe (交河故城), a natural fortress-city carved downwards from a vast loess plateau. You will wander its sun-scorched, labyrinthine streets, exploring the remarkably preserved ruins of temples and homes.

From the glare of the ruins, we descend into the cool, hidden lifelines of the Karez underground irrigation system (坎儿井), an ancient engineering marvel that channels mountain meltwater through subterranean tunnels, allowing life to flourish in the desert. The day concludes with a visit to the iconic Sugong Pagoda (苏公塔), a magnificent, soaring testament to the region’s Uyghur Islamic architecture.

For dinner, your evening is free to try another local specialty: laghman (拉条子). In many local eateries, you can watch chefs expertly pull dough into long, chewy noodles, which are then topped with a rich, savory stir-fry of lamb and vegetables.

Your final day of exploration is a journey through a landscape of raw, elemental power and deep history. We begin at the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves (柏孜克里克千佛洞), a gallery of faith carved into a cliffside. From there, we explore the vast, sun-baked adobe ruins of the ancient city of Gaochang (高昌故城).

The day’s climax is an encounter with the magnificent Flaming Mountains (火焰山). You will stand before the dramatic, barren, red-sandstone gullies and trenches of this mountain range, which appear to glow and radiate an intense heat under the fierce desert sun, earning them their legendary name. It is a powerful and unforgettable final landscape.

Afterwards, our journey by private vehicle concludes as we arrive in Urumqi (乌鲁木齐) and check into our hotel for a final night’s rest. Tonight, we will gather for our Farewell Dinner, a final toast to our epic journey through silk and stone.

Essential Information

  1. Activity Level: Adventurous & Demanding (Level 4/5)
This is a true expedition for the energetic traveler, covering vast distances and involving extensive walking, sometimes over uneven terrain at historical sites. It requires a good level of fitness and stamina to be fully enjoyed, particularly during the long travel days and activity-packed sightseeing schedule.

  2. Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. Our hotel selections are curated for a perfect balance of quality, comfort, and location. Our standard group tours feature the best available 4-star equivalent properties in each location. For private tours, we offer complete flexibility in your accommodations. Please be aware that hotel standards, amenities, and service levels in remote Silk Road cities will differ significantly from major hubs like Xi’an.

  3. Transportation
We believe the journey is as important as the destination. We utilize China’s world-class high-speed rail network for several long-distance connections, offering a fast and comfortable experience. Other travel between destinations is conducted in your private, modern, air-conditioned vehicle, allowing for the ultimate flexibility and immersion in the dramatic, changing landscapes of the Hexi Corridor.

  4. Joining the Tour
This tour begins in Xi’an (XIY). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport on Day 1 for your private transfer to the hotel. The guided portion of your journey concludes in Urumqi on the evening of Day 10, with Day 11 designated for your independent onward travel arrangements.

  5. Passports & Visas
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of departure from China. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. While you are responsible for obtaining your own visa, SinoVistas will provide all necessary supporting documentation, including a formal letter of invitation.

Important Notes

1. A Note on Travel on the Frontier
This journey is a true expedition that ventures into some of the most remote and culturally fascinating parts of China. This is the heart of its appeal, but it comes with a different standard of infrastructure.

  • Accommodations: While we always select the best available properties, please be aware that hotel standards and amenities in frontier cities like Yumen, Zhangye, and even Dunhuang will differ significantly from a major hub like Xi’an.

  • Flexibility: The itinerary covers vast distances. While we have built in time for comfortable travel, road conditions or other local factors can sometimes cause delays. A spirit of adventure and a flexible attitude are key to enjoying this journey.

2. A Note on Security & Checkpoints in Xinjiang
Please be aware that the final portion of our journey enters the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, which has a heightened security presence. You will encounter police and security checkpoints on roads between destinations. This is a routine and normal part of travel in the region. To ensure a smooth process, it is essential to have your original passport with you and easily accessible at all times (not packed in your main luggage). Your Storyteller Guide is an expert at navigating these checks and will facilitate them for you.

3. A Culinary Journey Along the Silk Road
This journey is a fascinating culinary adventure that follows the path of ancient trade. Your palate will travel from the wheat-and-noodle-based cuisine of the Han heartland in Xi’an to the hearty, lamb-focused dishes of the Hexi Corridor, and finally to the vibrant, Central Asian-influenced flavors of Xinjiang, with its fragrant kebabs, fresh naan bread, and delicious polo (pilaf).

4. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.

  • Payments: While mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay are prevalent, we highly recommend carrying a sufficient amount of cash. It is essential for purchases in smaller oasis towns, local markets, and areas with less reliable connectivity.

  • Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Crucially, internet and cellular service can be very slow or completely non-existent in the desert sections between cities. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel.

5. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all high-speed train tickets in China are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.

6. Packing for the Desert
A detailed packing list will be provided. Layering is absolutely key. The desert climate means you can experience intense sun and heat during the day and surprisingly cool temperatures at night. Sun protection (a wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses) is non-negotiable. Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are essential for exploring sandy, uneven archaeological sites and forts.

7. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.

8. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
