Why this journey? A note from our founder

We are guided by an old saying: to see 3,000 years of history, you go to Xi’an; for 1,000, Beijing; for the last 100, Shanghai.

We created The River of Time to turn that philosophy into an itinerary.

This is the story of China told in three acts—a seamless journey from the ancient origin, through the imperial apex, to the electric modern horizon. It’s the grand narrative, brilliantly focused.

Signature Experiences on This Path

  • Confront The Eternal Guard
In Xi’an, your journey begins at the source. You will stand in silence before the subterranean legions of the Terracotta Army, a profound encounter with the raw power and eternal ambition that forged a nation 3,000 years ago.

  • Step Into The Dragon’s Court
In Beijing, we take you to the magnificent center of a 1,000-year imperial age. You will step through the gates of the Forbidden City, the labyrinthine epicenter of Ming and Qing power, where the will of a single person shaped a continent.

  • Walk The Modern Horizon
The journey culminates in Shanghai. We take you to The Bund, where you can stand with one foot in the colonial past and gaze across the river at the sci-fi skyline of Pudong—a breathtaking, real-time view of the last 100 years of history flowing into the future.

The day’s perspective shifts as we dive into the living heart of old Beijing with a rickshaw ride through the ancient Hutong (胡同), glimpsing daily life unfolding in its narrow, winding alleys and traditional courtyard homes. Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner: a celebratory feast of succulent Peking Duck, its crispy skin carved to perfection at your table.

As dusk falls, we plunge you into the vibrant, neon-lit spectacle of the Great Tang All Day Mall (大唐不夜城). Important Notes

1. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility & High-Demand Sites
This journey covers many of China’s most famous and popular landmarks.

  • Crowds: Sites like the Forbidden City and the Terracotta Army can be very busy, especially during peak seasons. Your expert Storyteller Guide is a master at navigating these sites to provide the best possible experience, but a spirit of flexibility is always appreciated.

  • Ticketing: Several sites operate on a strict real-name, limited-capacity ticketing system. While we are experts at securing these tickets, in the rare case a site is sold out, your guide will arrange a visit to an equally compelling, high-quality alternative.

2. A Culinary Journey Across China
This journey is a true culinary odyssey. You will experience a wide spectrum of China’s great cuisines, from the imperial flavors and hearty noodles of Beijing and Xi’an in the north, to the famously fiery and complex dishes of Sichuan in Chengdu, and culminating in the delicate, often sweet, and refined cuisine of Shanghai. It is a feast for the senses.

3. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.

  • Payments: China operates on a near-cashless system driven by two main apps: WeChat Pay and Alipay. For convenience and true local immersion, we strongly recommend installing at least one of these apps on your phone and linking your credit card before your departure.

  • Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted in mainland China. Many travelers choose to install a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on their phones and devices before they travel to stay connected as they would at home.

4. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all high-speed train and internal flight tickets in China are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.

5. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. The key is layering, as you will be traveling through different climate zones. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are non-negotiable for this journey. Please also be mindful of security restrictions for train and air travel within China regarding items like pocket knives and large power banks.
