Why this journey? A note from our founder
I believe some of the most profound stories are not written in books; they are woven into cloth, pounded into paper, and sung in the valleys. This is the living, breathing legacy of Guizhou, a China that exists outside the grand narrative of emperors and dynasties.
I created A Weaver’s Journey for the traveler who wants not just to see a culture, but to touch its threads. This is a story about the profound connection between a people, their landscape, and the art they create with their own hands. You will be welcomed with rice wine by Miao villagers, learn the secrets of ancient papermaking, and stand in a village where the men are the last licensed gunmen in China.
This is our invitation to trace the vibrant threads of living history, one artisan and one story at a time.

From the fortress, we travel to the Gejia village of Matang for an intimate, hands-on Batik workshop (蜡染体验). Here, you will learn the magical, ancient process of wax-resist dyeing from local master artisans, using a small spatula to draw intricate patterns with melted beeswax onto cloth before it’s dipped in rich, natural indigo dye. We end our day in Kaili (凯里), the heart of the Miao and Dong region. Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, a feast introducing you to the unique sour and spicy flavors of Guizhou cuisine, centered around its famous and delicious Sour Fish Hot Pot (酸汤鱼).

From this village of secrets, we continue to the proud and unique Basha Miao Village (岜沙苗寨), a community that reveres trees as gods and maintains a proud warrior history. You will be welcomed with a powerful cultural performance and witness the men of the village, who are still permitted to own and carry traditional, homemade guns, a truly unforgettable cultural encounter. Day 5: A Village in the Clouds & The Path Home (Zhaoxing)
Today is for soaking in the landscape and the unique culture of the Dong people. Our morning begins as we travel by private vehicle up to the Tangan Dong Village (堂安侗寨). Perched on a mountainside and preserved as China’s only Dong ecological museum, Tangan offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding terraced valleys.
After exploring this beautifully preserved village, our journey back to Zhaoxing is an immersive one. We will embark on a scenic, downhill hike (approx. 12km / 7.5 miles), following a path that winds through lush forests, active rice paddies, and small hamlets. It is a beautiful and rewarding walk that allows you to connect deeply with the landscape. We arrive back in Zhaoxing Dong Village (肇兴侗寨) in the afternoon. From there, we visit the Qingman “Short-Skirt” Miao Village (青曼短裙苗寨), a village renowned for its exquisite, hand-woven textiles. You will have the opportunity to see local women working at their looms, their fingers deftly creating the intricate patterns that are a hallmark of their cultural identity. This elegant, three-story pavilion, perched on a giant boulder in the Nanming River, is a beautiful symbol of the city’s scholarly and artistic heritage. As our Weaver’s Journey concludes, our farewell is not a formal meal, but a final, vibrant immersion into local life. The beautiful hike from Zhaoxing to Tangan requires a good level of fitness. Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are essential to fully enjoy the deep immersion into rural life.Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. In the capital city of Guiyang, our standard tours feature excellent 4-star properties. In the remote and charming minority villages of Zhaoxing and Xijiang, we select the best-available boutique guesthouses that offer stunning views and authentic local character. Please be aware that hotel standards, amenities, and service levels in these rural areas will differ significantly from a major city hotel.Transportation
This journey is a classic Guizhou road trip at its heart, relying exclusively on a private, modern, air-conditioned vehicle. This provides the ultimate flexibility to navigate the winding mountain roads, to travel at a comfortable pace, and to stop for spontaneous photo opportunities in the beautiful, lush landscapes.Joining the Tour

Important Notes
1. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility & Rural Travel
This journey ventures into the beautiful, mountainous, and less-traveled parts of Guizhou. This is the heart of its charm, but it also means that travel can be unpredictable. While we make every effort to adhere to the published itinerary, local conditions such as weather, road access, or village festivals may require your guide to adjust the sequence of activities to provide the best and safest experience. Your flexibility and adventurous spirit are key components of this journey.
2. A Note on Accommodations in Remote Areas
Part of the magic of this journey is staying in charming guesthouses in the heart of remote minority villages like Zhaoxing and Xijiang. While we always select the best-available, clean, and comfortable options that offer stunning views and authentic character, it is important to understand that these properties are often family-run. The amenities, service levels, and breakfast options will be simpler and less luxurious than the 4-star city hotels you will experience in Guiyang. We see this as a beautiful part of the authentic cultural immersion.
3. Cultural Immersion & The Flavors of Guizhou
This journey is a deep dive into Guizhou’s unique culinary landscape, which is very different from other Chinese cuisines. It is famous for its bold sour and spicy (suanla) flavors. You will have many opportunities to try local specialties, from the iconic Sour Fish Hot Pot to various dishes made with local herbs and vegetables. We encourage you to be open-minded and adventurous with your palate!
4. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.
Payments: While mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay are prevalent in cities like Guiyang, it is highly recommended to carry a sufficient amount of cash. In the remote minority villages and local markets we will be visiting, cash is often the easiest and sometimes the only way to pay for small purchases, snacks, or souvenirs.
Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Crucially, internet access in the rural guesthouses of Zhaoxing and Xijiang may be slow, intermittent, or unavailable. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel to stay connected where possible.
5. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all park entries and travel permits in this region are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.
6. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. Layering is key, as temperatures can vary with altitude and weather. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with good grip are absolutely essential for the cobblestone streets of ancient towns, uneven village paths, and the hike to Tangan. Rain gear is also highly recommended, as the weather can be misty.
7. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.
8. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
