Why this journey? A note from our founder

I believe the most beautiful journeys are those that feel like stepping through a series of magnificent, painted gates, with each one opening into a new and distinct world. The classic route through Northwest Yunnan is such a journey.

I created The Yunnan Heritage Route because it is the essential story of this incredible province, told through its most iconic living cultures and breathtaking landscapes. This is a journey that begins in the tranquil, elegant kingdom of the Bai people in Dali, moves to the romantic, canal-filled old town of the Naxi in Lijiang, and culminates in the sacred, spiritual realm of the Tibetan plateau in Shangri-La.

You will learn the meaning of the “three courses of tea,” cycle along a serene alpine lake, stand before a sacred snow mountain, and feel the profound spiritual energy of a Tibetan monastery. This is our invitation to travel the path that has enchanted poets, artists, and explorers for centuries.

Signature Experiences on This Path

  • Experience the Bai “Three-Course Tea” Ceremony
In a traditional courtyard home in Dali, you will be welcomed with a formal “Three-Course Tea” ceremony. This is a profound Bai tradition that represents the three stages of life—sweet, bitter, and aftertaste. It is an intimate and authentic cultural experience.

  • Learn from a Master of Tie-Dye Art
Journey to a Bai minority village renowned for its intricate tie-dye (扎染) craftsmanship. In a hands-on workshop with a local master, you will learn the traditional techniques of twisting, binding, and dyeing cloth with natural indigo to create your own beautiful and unique textile art.

  • Ascend the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
You will take a cable car high onto the magnificent Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a sacred peak for the Naxi people. From an observation platform, you will stand in the presence of glaciers and gaze out at a breathtaking panorama of snow-capped summits.

  • Immerse Yourself in a Sacred Tibetan Monastery
In Shangri-La, you will visit the magnificent Songzanlin Monastery. You will walk its sprawling, golden-roofed halls, the air thick with the scent of yak butter lamps and the low murmur of chanting, and feel the profound spiritual energy of this “Little Potala Palace.”

Your Journey, Day by Day

大理古城a
Day 1: Arrival in the Ancient Kingdom (Dali)

Welcome to Yunnan, a province of serene lakes, sacred mountains, and vibrant living cultures. Your journey begins upon your arrival at Dali Airport (DLU), the gateway to the ancient Bai kingdom. You are greeted by your private transfer to our hotel, nestled within the charming, stone-paved streets of Dali Old Town (大理古城).

The evening is yours to settle in and take your first steps into this beautifully preserved ancient city. As dusk falls, you can stroll along its main thoroughfares, where the air is filled with the scent of local snacks and the sound of craftsmen at work. Perhaps find a quiet rooftop bar with a view of the magnificent Cangshan mountains that form the city’s backdrop, and enjoy a cup of local tea as you acclimate to the gentle pace of life here. Your guided Sinovistas adventure will officially commence tomorrow morning.

三道茶a
Day 2: Three Pagodas, Three Teas & A Welcome Feast (Dali/Lijiang)

A day of deep immersion into Bai culture begins at the magnificent Three Pagodas (三塔) of the Chongsheng Temple, their three elegant, white forms standing starkly against the backdrop of the verdant Cangshan mountains. You will walk the grounds of this ancient Buddhist site, feeling the history of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms.

Afterwards, we invite you into a traditional Bai courtyard home for an authentic “Three-Course Tea” ceremony (三道茶). A local host will guide you through this profound ritual, where you will taste three distinct cups representing the bitterness, sweetness, and aftertaste of life. We then spend the afternoon exploring the vibrant Dali Old Town (大理古城), from its grand southern gate to its lively market streets and the quiet banks of the streams that flow through it. Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, a feast of flavorful local Bai dishes, perhaps including fresh fish from Erhai Lake and unique dishes made with local flowers.

扎染体验
Day 3: Lakeside Cycles & The Road to Lijiang (Lijiang)

This morning, we enjoy a scenic cycling excursion along the Erhai Lake Ecological Corridor (洱海生态走廊), a beautifully paved path that hugs the shoreline. You’ll feel the gentle breeze as you ride with the serene, blue water on one side and lush, green farm fields on the other, a perfect, peaceful immersion into the local landscape. (Note: Should weather be unsuitable for cycling, a scenic drive will be arranged instead).

We then journey to the village of Zhoucheng (周城村), the heart of Bai tie-dye craftsmanship, for a hands-on tie-dye workshop (扎染体验). A local master will show you the traditional techniques of twisting, binding, and dyeing cloth with natural indigo to create stunning patterns. Afterwards, we visit the historic town of Xizhou (喜洲) to admire its beautifully preserved traditional courtyard homes. Our scenic drive then continues, arriving in the evening at the magnificent Old Town of Lijiang (丽江古城). Tonight, your evening is free to get lost in its charming, lantern-lit alleyways and find a spot for a classic Naxi-style dinner.

玉龙雪山
Day 4: The Jade Dragon’s Realm (Lijiang)

Today we ascend to the heavens. Our destination is the magnificent Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山), a sacred peak for the Naxi people that looms over the entire region. Our journey begins at the Ganhai Meadows (甘海子草甸), a vast alpine pasture at the mountain’s base that offers a stunning first panorama of the mountain’s thirteen peaks.

From there, we take a cable car high up the mountainside to an observation platform. Here, at over 4,500 meters, you will stand in the presence of glaciers, surrounded by breathtaking, high-altitude views of the surrounding landscape. After descending from this powerful peak, we will visit the quieter, more authentic Baisha Old Town (白沙古镇). As the original capital of the Naxi kingdom, it offers a peaceful glimpse into the past, where we will admire its famous Ming Dynasty murals. Tonight is for your own culinary adventure in Lijiang; this is the perfect opportunity to try a hot pot made with a variety of delicious local wild mushrooms, a true taste of Yunnan’s natural bounty.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Lijiang

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

虎跳峡
Day 5: The Leaping Tiger & The Lost Horizon (Lijiang/Shangri-La)

Our journey continues as we ascend higher onto the vast Tibetan plateau. The centerpiece of our drive is a stop at the breathtaking Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡). We will hike down a series of steps to a wooden platform at the gorge’s narrowest point. Here, you will feel the thunderous power of the Jinsha River as it roars past you, a visceral and awe-inspiring display of nature’s force carving its way through the mountains.

From the dramatic power of the gorge, our scenic drive continues, climbing ever higher. The landscape transforms, becoming more rugged and open, dotted with yaks and traditional Tibetan dwellings. We arrive in the legendary city of Zhongdian, now officially renamed Shangri-La (香格里拉). Upon arrival, your evening is free to acclimatize to the high altitude and find a cozy spot for a simple, warming dinner, perhaps a comforting bowl of noodle soup or some handmade Tibetan momos.

You will walk its halls, the air thick with the scent of yak butter lamps and the low murmur of chanting monks, feeling the profound spiritual energy of this sacred place.

We then explore the charming Dukezong Ancient Town (独克宗古城), walking its cobblestone streets and spinning the world’s largest prayer wheel for good fortune. Our day culminates with a special Tibetan Family Visit (藏族家访). You will be welcomed into a local home, stepping out of the role of a tourist and into that of a guest, to share a cup of salty yak butter tea and experience the warm, genuine hospitality of the Tibetan people. As our journey concludes, we will gather for a special Farewell Dinner, a feast of hearty Tibetan specialties like yak stew and barley bread, a final toast to our adventure on the roof of the world.

Essential Information

  1. Activity Level: Active (Level 3/5)
This journey is an active exploration that involves daily walking through ancient towns with uneven cobblestone streets, a scenic cycling excursion, and a moderate hike at the spectacular Tiger Leaping Gorge. The final portion of the trip takes place at high altitude in Shangri-La (approx. 3,200m / 10,500ft), which can make physical exertion more strenuous. A good level of fitness is required to fully enjoy all activities.

  2. Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. In Dali, our standard tours feature excellent 4-star properties. In the historic old towns of Lijiang and Shangri-La, we select the best-available, charming boutique hotels or guesthouses that offer stunning views and authentic local character. Please be aware that hotel standards and amenities in these heritage areas may differ from a modern city hotel.

  3. Transportation
This journey is a classic Yunnan road trip at its heart, relying almost exclusively on a private, modern, air-conditioned vehicle. This provides the ultimate flexibility to navigate the winding mountain roads, to travel at a pace that allows for acclimatization, and to stop for spontaneous photo opportunities in the breathtaking landscapes.

  4. Joining the Tour
This tour is a point-to-point journey that begins in Dali (DLU) and concludes in Shangri-La (DIG). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Dali Airport on Day 1 for your private transfer to the hotel. The guided portion of your journey concludes after breakfast on Day 7, which is your day for independent onward travel from Shangri-La.

  5. Passports, Visas & Special Permits
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of departure from China. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. Please note that travel to the Tibetan-inhabited region of Shangri-La requires special travel permits. As part of your journey, SinoVistas will handle the entire application process for these permits on your behalf. We require clear, scanned copies of your passport and visa well in advance to secure them.

Important Notes

1. A Note on High Altitude & Acclimatization
This journey involves a gradual but significant ascent to high altitude, culminating in Shangri-La at approximately 3,200 meters (10,500 feet). While the itinerary is designed to allow for acclimatization, some travelers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness (e.g., headache, fatigue). It is essential to stay well-hydrated, move at a comfortable pace, and avoid strenuous activity upon first arrival in Shangri-La. This journey is not recommended for those with pre-existing respiratory or heart conditions without first consulting a qualified medical professional.

2. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility & Crowds
The classic route through Yunnan is deservedly popular. Major sites like Dali Old Town, Lijiang Old Town, and Tiger Leaping Gorge can be very busy, especially during Chinese national holidays. Your expert Storyteller Guide is a master at navigating these sites to avoid peak times where possible, but a spirit of flexibility and patience is always appreciated. Weather in the mountains can also change, which may require minor adjustments to the itinerary sequence.

3. Cultural Immersion & A Culinary Mosaic
This journey is a fascinating culinary adventure through three distinct cultures. You will experience the fresh, slightly sour flavors of Bai cuisine in Dali, the unique herbs and preserved meats of Naxi dishes in Lijiang, and the hearty, warming, yak-and-barley-based food of the Tibetan plateau in Shangri-La. It is a true taste of Yunnan’s cultural diversity.

4. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.

  • Payments: While mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay are dominant in Dali and Lijiang, we recommend carrying some cash, as it becomes more useful for small purchases in the more remote areas and in Shangri-La.

  • Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Internet access in the guesthouses of the old towns and in Shangri-La may be slower than in major cities. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel.

5. Passport, Visa, & Special Permit Information
To ensure a smooth journey, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport and your Chinese visa no later than 45 days prior to departure. This is essential for us to secure the multiple, mandatory special travel permits required for foreign travelers to enter the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Diqing (Shangri-La).

6. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. Layering is absolutely key, as temperatures can vary dramatically between the lower altitude of Dali and the high plateau of Shangri-La. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with good grip are essential for the cobblestone streets of the ancient towns and for the hike at Tiger Leaping Gorge. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) is also crucial due to the strong sun at high altitudes.

7. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.

8. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
