Why this journey? A note from our founder

I believe some cultures are not grown from the soil, but from the sea. Their soul is salt-grown—shaped by the coastal air, the savory brine of their world-renowned cuisine, and the bittersweet tang of an ancestor’s journey across the ocean. This is the soul of the Chaoshan people and their diaspora.

I created The Salt-Grown Soul because I believe to understand this heritage, you must taste it. This journey is a pilgrimage for the palate and the spirit, an odyssey into the heart of one of China’s great gastronomic traditions, which for so many, is the very flavor of memory.

We will not just visit places; we will trace the threads of family and history through the authentic, unforgettable flavors of home—from the bustling ports of departure to the quiet ancestral villages. This is our invitation to come home, to sit at the ancestor’s table, and to taste the very essence of your own story.

Essential Information

  1. Activity Level: Active (Level 3/5)
This journey is an active exploration that involves daily walking through ancient towns with uneven cobblestone streets, a scenic cycling excursion, and a moderate hike at the spectacular Tiger Leaping Gorge. Crucially, the journey involves a gradual but significant ascent to high altitude, culminating in Shangri-La (approx. 3,200m / 10,500ft), which can make all physical exertion more strenuous. A good level of fitness is required.

  2. Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. In Dali, our standard tours feature excellent 4-star properties. In the historic old towns of Lijiang and Shangri-La, we select the best-available, charming boutique hotels or guesthouses that offer stunning views and authentic local character. Please be aware that hotel standards and amenities in these heritage areas will differ from a modern city hotel.

  3. Transportation
This journey is a classic Yunnan road trip at its heart, relying almost exclusively on a private, modern, air-conditioned vehicle. This provides the ultimate flexibility to navigate the winding mountain roads, to travel at a pace that allows for acclimatization, and to stop for spontaneous photo opportunities in the breathtaking landscapes.

  4. Joining the Tour
This tour is a point-to-point journey that begins in Dali (DLU) and concludes in Shangri-La (DIG). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Dali Airport on Day 1 for your private transfer. The guided portion of your journey concludes after breakfast on Day 7, which is your day for independent onward travel.

  5. Passports, Visas & Special Permits
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of departure from China. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. Importantly, travel to the Tibetan-inhabited region of Shangri-La requires special travel permits. As part of your journey, SinoVistas will handle the entire application process for these permits on your behalf. We require clear, scanned copies of your passport and visa well in advance to secure them.

Important Notes

1. A Culinary Pilgrimage: The Heart of the Journey
This journey is, at its heart, a pilgrimage for the palate. It is a deep immersion into some of China’s most celebrated and distinct regional cuisines.

  • Minnan Cuisine (Xiamen/Quanzhou): Expect light, fresh flavors with an emphasis on seafood.

  • Chaoshan/Teochew Cuisine (Shantou/Chaozhou): Famous for its legendary beef hot pot, intricate snacks, and a deep focus on the pure, natural flavor of ingredients.

  • Cantonese Cuisine (Guangzhou): The cradle of world-renowned dim sum and succulent roast meats.
We encourage you to be adventurous and open-minded, as tasting these authentic flavors is a core part of the “Homecoming” experience.

2. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility
This is a fast-paced journey covering a significant distance by high-speed rail. While we make every effort to adhere to the published itinerary, train schedules can occasionally be altered by the rail authorities with little notice. Your expert Storyteller Guide will seamlessly manage any such changes to provide the best possible experience.

3. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.

  • Payments: China operates on a near-cashless system driven by two main apps: WeChat Pay and Alipay. For convenience and true local immersion, we strongly recommend installing at least one of these apps on your phone and linking your credit card before your departure.

  • Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted in mainland China. Many travelers choose to install a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on their phones and devices before they travel to stay connected as they would at home.

4. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all high-speed train tickets in China are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure. This allows us to secure all necessary tickets on your behalf.

5. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. This journey takes place in China’s subtropical south, so light, breathable clothing is recommended for most of the year. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are absolutely essential for the cobblestone streets of ancient towns and exploring large heritage sites. An umbrella is also advisable.

6. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.

7. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
