Why this journey? A note from our founder
I believe there are places on earth where the landscape itself is the greatest masterpiece. Where the hills are sculpted, the rivers are painted, and the earth is woven into a tapestry of life. This is the living canvas of Guangxi.
I created The Guangxi Canvas to be an immersion into this world where nature and humanity have collaborated to create art. This journey is a story told through breathtaking compositions. You will stand before rice terraces sculpted into the mountainside like a “Dragon’s Backbone,” and then float down a “Painted River” that has inspired artists for a thousand years.
This is our invitation to step into a living landscape painting, to witness the artistry of the Dong and Zhuang people, and to find your own inspiration on this magnificent canvas.

Your Journey, Day by Day
Day 1: Arrival in a Landscape Painting (Guilin)
Welcome to Guangxi, a province where the landscape itself feels like a classical work of art. Your journey begins upon your arrival at Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL), where our representative will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel.
The evening is yours to settle in and take your first steps into this painted world. As dusk falls, you might take a leisurely stroll along the banks of the Li River (漓江). Here, you can see the city’s iconic landmarks—the Sun and Moon Pagodas—begin to glow with brilliant gold and silver light, their reflections shimmering on the water. In the background, the unique, dream-like silhouettes of the karst peaks stand against the darkening sky. It is a magical first impression of the surreal beauty that awaits.

Day 2: A Dragon’s Backbone & A Taste of the Mountains (Guilin)
Our adventure begins as we ascend by private vehicle into the mountains to the magnificent Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田), also known as the Dragon’s Backbone. This is a breathtaking masterpiece of agricultural art, sculpted over centuries by the Zhuang and Yao people. We will journey to the Pingan Zhuang Village Terraces, where you will climb to a viewpoint for a stunning panorama of thousands of terraces cascading down the mountainside like a woven, fabric-like tapestry.
From the terraces, our scenic drive continues, taking us into the heart of Dong country. We arrive in the evening in Sanjiang (三江). Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, an authentic and flavorful introduction to Dong minority cuisine. You will have the chance to try unique local specialties, perhaps including savory grilled river fish and the famous local “oil tea” (youcha, 油茶), a rich, savory, and warming beverage that is a cornerstone of Dong hospitality.

Day 3: The Genius of the Dong People (Guilin)
Today is dedicated to the architectural wonders of the Dong people. We will visit the magnificent Chengyang Eight Villages (程阳八寨), a beautiful complex of traditional wooden homes nestled by a river. The centerpiece of our visit is a walk across the incredible Chengyang Wind and Rain Bridge (程阳风雨桥). You will marvel at this architectural masterpiece—a massive, multi-pavilioned structure built entirely of wood using intricate joinery, without a single nail or rivet holding it together. It is both a bridge and a community gathering place.
After immersing ourselves in the unique culture and ingenious craftsmanship of the Dong people, we return by private vehicle to Guilin. Tonight, your evening is free to seek out the city’s most famous and beloved dish: a delicious bowl of Guilin Rice Noodles (mifen, 米粉). Your guide can point you to a bustling, authentic local shop where you can customize your bowl with a variety of pickles, nuts, and sauces, just like a local.

Day 4: A Cruise Through a Painted World (Guilin)
Today, you step directly into a classic Chinese landscape painting. You will board a boat for a serene cruise down the iconic Li River (漓江), from Guilin to the charming town of Yangshuo (阳朔). For several hours, you will be surrounded by the otherworldly beauty of towering karst peaks shrouded in mist, the very landscape that has inspired artists for a thousand years. A simple but delicious lunch will be served on board, allowing you to dine while fully immersed in the breathtaking scenery.
After arriving in Yangshuo, we enjoy a scenic cycling excursion through the idyllic countryside, riding past rice paddies and sleepy villages. (Note: Should weather be unsuitable for cycling, a scenic drive will be arranged instead). Tonight is free for you to explore the lively West Street and find a spot for Yangshuo’s signature dish, Beer Fish (pijiu yu, 啤酒鱼).

Day 5: A River of Dreams & A Silver Cave (Guilin)
We continue our exploration of Yangshuo’s otherworldly beauty. We’ll first journey through the idyllic landscape of the Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊), a picturesque country road flanked by dramatic karst peaks of varying, fantastical shapes.
The highlight of our day is a traditional bamboo raft trip down the gentle Yulong River (遇龙河). This is a quiet, peaceful immersion into the heart of the countryside. You will sit back as a punter gently guides your raft down the clear, emerald water, gliding past ancient stone bridges, lush bamboo groves, and local farmers working in their fields with their water buffalo. (Please note: This rafting experience is available from April to October and is weather-dependent).
From the serene river, we then venture underground to explore the magnificent, glittering interior of the Silver Cave (银子岩), a stunning multi-level karst cave filled with crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by colorful lights to create a fantastical, otherworldly atmosphere.

Day 6: A Peachy Paradise & A Farewell Toast (Guilin)
Our final day of exploration takes us to Xanadu (世外桃源), a beautiful park that physically recreates the idyllic, pastoral paradise described in the classic Chinese fable of “The Peach Blossom Spring.” You will take a boat through a waterway, passing under mountains and emerging into a hidden valley where people in traditional ethnic clothing demonstrate ancient crafts, offering a romanticized glimpse into a simpler, harmonious way of life.
We then return to Guilin to visit the city’s most iconic and beloved landmark: the Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山). You will see how this natural rock formation, perched at the confluence of two rivers, looks uncannily like a giant elephant dipping its trunk into the water to drink. As our journey through this living canvas concludes, we will gather for a special Farewell Dinner at a beautiful riverside restaurant, toasting to the art and landscapes we have witnessed.

Important Notes
1. A Note on the Longji Rice Terraces: A Seasonal Canvas
The beauty of the “Dragon’s Backbone” terraces is magnificent year-round but changes dramatically with the seasons. It is important to set the right expectation for your visit.
May – September (The Green Season): The terraces are a vibrant, lush sea of green as the rice plants grow, cascading down the mountainsides.
October (The Golden Season): Shortly before the harvest, the terraces turn a brilliant gold, creating a spectacular and highly photogenic landscape.
December – Early April (The Mirror Season): The empty, water-filled paddies create a stunning, mirror-like mosaic that reflects the sky, offering stark and beautiful graphic patterns.
2. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility & Weather
Travel in the karst landscapes of Guangxi is subject to the whims of its subtropical climate. Weather can be misty and change rapidly. River levels for the Li River Cruise and Yulong River rafting can also fluctuate. Your expert Storyteller Guide’s top priority is your safety and enjoyment, and they may need to adjust the sequence or availability of certain activities in response to local conditions.
3. Cultural Immersion & The Flavors of Guangxi
This journey is an immersion into the unique cuisines of the Dong, Zhuang, and Han people of Guangxi. The food here is known for its fresh, clean flavors, often using river fish and a variety of local spices and herbs. You will have many opportunities to try regional specialties, from the world-famous Guilin Rice Noodles (mifen) to Yangshuo’s signature Beer Fish (pijiu yu) and the delicious bamboo-tube rice of the terrace regions.
4. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.
Payments: While mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay are dominant in Guilin and Yangshuo, we recommend carrying a sufficient amount of cash. In the remote mountain guesthouses of Longji and Sanjiang, cash is often the easiest and sometimes the only way to pay.
Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Internet access in the rural guesthouses may be slower or less stable than in the city. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel.
5. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all park entries and travel permits in this region are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.
6. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with good grip are absolutely essential for the cobblestone streets of ancient towns and the stone paths of the rice terraces. Given the region’s climate, lightweight, quick-drying clothing and reliable rain gear are highly recommended year-round.
7. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.
8. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
