Why this journey? A note from our founder

Sichuan is a province of profound dualities. It is the gentle, tranquil home of the beloved Giant Panda, but also a land of monumental ambition, where ancient engineers tamed rivers and devotees carved the world’s largest Buddha from a cliffside. It is a realm of serene, colorful valleys that feel like paradise, and the home of a mysterious, 3,000-year-old civilization that defies history.

I created The Sichuan Heritage Trail because I believe a journey through this land should embrace all of its incredible facets. This is our definitive exploration of a province that has shaped China’s body and soul.

You will see the iconic pandas, but you will also stand in the shadow of a Buddha so vast it dwarfs the river beneath it. You will wander through valleys of impossible, sapphire-blue water, and you will come face-to-face with the haunting bronze masks of a lost Bronze Age kingdom. This is a journey designed to leave you in a constant state of wonder.

Signature Experiences on This Path

  • Encounter China’s National Treasure
At the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, you will spend a morning with one of the world’s most beloved creatures. Observe these magnificent animals up close in a world-class conservation facility as they play, climb, and feast on bamboo.

  • Gaze Upon the World’s Largest Buddha
Experience the colossal scale of the Leshan Giant Buddha from the best possible vantage point: the water. A river cruise will take you to the foot of this 71-meter-tall statue, allowing you to fully appreciate the awe-inspiring ambition of a carving that took 90 years to complete.

  • Step into a Real-Life Eden
Immerse yourself in the legendary beauty of the Jiuzhaigou Valley. This is a landscape that feels like a dream, a chain of brilliantly colored, crystal-clear lakes, multi-level waterfalls, and vibrant forests, all nestled in a pristine mountain valley.

  • Witness a 2,000-Year-Old Miracle of Engineering
At Dujiangyan, you will witness an ancient irrigation system that is so perfectly designed, it has been functioning continuously for over 2,200 years. It is a profound testament to the ingenuity and wisdom of China’s ancient engineers.

Your Journey, Day by Day

成都
Day 1: Arrival in the Land of Plenty (Chengdu)

Welcome to Sichuan, the legendary “Land of Plenty” and the vibrant gateway to the great Tibetan Plateau. Your journey begins upon your arrival at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU), where our representative will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel.

The evening is yours to settle in and get your first taste of this city renowned for its relaxed pace and fiery flavors. You might take an independent stroll to the lively Anshun Bridge (安顺廊桥), its intricate architecture beautifully illuminated against the night sky, a perfect introduction to the city’s charm. For dinner, you could dive headfirst into the local culture by finding a bustling restaurant for a classic Sichuanese dish like Mapo Tofu or Kung Pao Chicken in the very city where they were perfected. Your guided Sinovistas adventure will officially commence tomorrow morning.

乐山大佛
Day 2: Pandas, A Colossal Buddha & A Welcome Feast (Chengdu)

Our day begins with an encounter with China’s most beloved ambassadors at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地). We arrive in the morning, their most active feeding time, to watch these magnificent creatures as they playfully tumble and contentedly crunch on stalks of bamboo. You will also have a chance to see the charming, smaller Red Pandas in this world-class conservation facility.

From this gentle encounter, we journey to a site of monumental devotion. A private river cruise will take us to the confluence of three rivers, where the colossal Leshan Giant Buddha (乐山大佛) will be revealed. You will gaze up from the water at the full, awe-inspiring scale of this 71-meter-tall statue, carved directly into a riverside cliff over 1,200 years ago to calm the turbulent waters below. Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, a celebratory feast to properly ignite your senses with the soul of Sichuan cuisine: the famous málà (麻辣) sensation, a complex dance of fiery chili and the unique, tongue-tingling numbness of the Sichuan peppercorn.

峨眉山
Day 3: The Sacred Summit & An Ancient Wonder of Water (Chengdu/Dujiangyan)

Today we make a pilgrimage to one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains, the magnificent Mount Emei (峨眉山), a UNESCO World Heritage site blanketed in lush, ancient forests. We will ascend by cable car into its misty upper reaches to visit the serene Wannian Temple (万年寺), “The Temple of Ten Thousand Years,” renowned for its beautiful, tooth-and-tusk statue of the Bodhisattva Puxian.

After descending from the sacred summit, we explore the tranquil Baoguo Temple (报国寺) at the mountain’s base, the gateway to any pilgrimage up the mountain. From here, our journey continues to the city of Dujiangyan (都江堰), home to an engineering marvel that will be the focus of our next day. For dinner tonight, your evening is free to find a simple, restorative local meal after a full day of invigorating mountain air.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Dujiangyan

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

叠溪海子
Day 4: Taming the River & The Road to the North (Dujiangyan)

Our morning is dedicated to the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (都江堰水利工程), a profound testament to ancient wisdom. You will walk across the Anlan Suspension Bridge and gaze down at the “Fish Mouth” levee, witnessing a 2,200-year-old miracle of engineering that brilliantly divides the river, controlling floods and irrigating the Chengdu plain for millennia without a single dam.

Our journey then turns north, where we are welcomed into the unique culture of the Qiang people with a special Welcome Banquet for lunch. The scenic drive continues into the mountains, with a stop to gaze upon the hauntingly beautiful, turquoise waters of Diexi Lake (叠溪海子), a stunning landscape formed by an earthquake in the 1930s. We end the day by passing through the imposing, ancient gates of Songpan Ancient Town (松潘古城), a historic garrison town, on our way to our hotel in the nearby town of Chuanzhusi.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Chuanzhusi

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

九寨沟
Day 5: A Valley of Sapphire Lakes (Dujiangyan/Jiuzhaigou)

Prepare to step into a landscape that feels like a dream. Today is a full immersion into the legendary beauty of the Jiuzhaigou Valley (九寨沟), a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its otherworldly water features. You will journey through its main valleys, wandering along wooden boardwalks that take you to the edge of brilliantly colored, crystal-clear lakes that shimmer in impossible shades of sapphire, emerald, and turquoise.

You will see highlights like the magnificent Nuorilang Waterfall, the vast Long Lake, and the famous Five-Color Pond, each vista more breathtaking than the last. For your convenience, lunch is an included buffet at a restaurant inside the park, allowing you to maximize your time in this wonderland. After a full day of walking and wonder, your evening is free to relax and reflect on the incredible beauty you have witnessed.

黄龙
Day 6: The Dragon’s Golden Scales (Jiuzhaigou/Huanglong)

Our journey continues to another UNESCO wonder: the Huanglong Scenic Area (黄龙景区), aptly named “Yellow Dragon” for its unique and spectacular landscape. To preserve your energy for the breathtaking sights, we will ascend the mountain by an uphill cable car, taking in views of the dense forest below.

From the top, you will begin your descent on foot along a series of well-maintained boardwalks. The path will reveal a spectacular landscape of thousands of colorful travertine (calcium carbonate) pools. These pools, naturally terraced in golden, dragon-like scales down the mountainside, are filled with water that shimmers in brilliant shades of turquoise and green. It is an otherworldly and unforgettable sight. From here, our scenic drive continues, bringing us to the town of Maoxian (茂县) for the night, a major center of the Qiang people.

Our final day of exploration is a journey from a mysterious, ancient past to the vibrant, living present. We drive to the incredible Sanxingdui Museum (三星堆博物馆), a world-class institution dedicated to a lost Bronze Age civilization that defies traditional Chinese history. You will come face-to-face with its haunting, otherworldly bronze masks with alien-like eyes, towering bronze spirit trees, and delicate golden scepters—relics of a culture unlike any other on earth.

From this ancient mystery, we return to modern Chengdu and dive into its living history. We will wander the chic, recreated alleyways of Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子), where traditional teahouses and courtyard homes now sit beside stylish boutiques and cafes. We then immerse ourselves in the lively, bustling atmosphere of the Jinli Ancient Street (锦里古街), a vibrant tapestry of local snacks, intricate handicrafts, and lively folk performances. As our Sichuan adventure concludes, we gather for a final Farewell Dinner, another chance to savor the bold and unforgettable flavors of the region.

Essential Information

  1. Activity Level: Demanding (Level 4/5)
This is a fast-paced journey that covers significant ground and altitude. It involves extensive walking and hiking, often on uneven paths or stairs, particularly at the high-altitude sites of Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, and during the ascent portion of Mount Emei. A high level of fitness and good prior acclimatization are essential to fully enjoy this spectacular but physically demanding adventure.

  2. Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. In Chengdu, our standard tours feature excellent 4-star properties. In the more remote mountainous regions such as Dujiangyan, the Jiuzhaigou area, and Maoxian, we select the best-available comfortable hotels or charming guesthouses that offer local character. Please be aware that hotel standards and amenities in these areas will differ significantly from the major city.

  3. Transportation
This journey is a classic Sichuan road trip at its heart, relying almost exclusively on a private, modern, air-conditioned vehicle. This provides the ultimate flexibility to navigate the winding mountain roads, to travel at a comfortable pace, and to stop for spontaneous photo opportunities in the breathtaking landscapes.

  4. Joining the Tour
This tour begins and concludes in Chengdu (CTU). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport on Day 1 for your private transfer to the hotel. The guided portion of your journey concludes after breakfast on Day 8, which is your day for independent onward travel.

  5. Passports & Visas
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of departure from China. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. While you are responsible for obtaining your own visa, SinoVistas will provide all necessary supporting documentation, including a formal letter of invitation.

Important Notes

1. A Note on High Altitude & Acclimatization
This journey ventures into areas of significant high altitude, with both Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong situated well above 3,000 meters (10,000 feet). The itinerary is designed to allow for gradual acclimatization, but some travelers may experience symptoms of altitude sickness (e.g., headache, fatigue, shortness of breath). It is essential to stay well-hydrated, move at a comfortable pace, and communicate any discomfort immediately to your Storyteller Guide. This journey is not recommended for those with pre-existing respiratory or heart conditions without first consulting a qualified medical professional.

2. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility & Crowds
Travel in the mountains of Sichuan can be dynamic. Weather can change rapidly, and major sites like Jiuzhaigou and the Leshan Giant Buddha are world-renowned and can be very popular, particularly during Chinese national holidays. Your expert Storyteller Guide is a master at navigating these sites to avoid peak times and minimize crowds where possible, but a spirit of flexibility and patience is always appreciated. They may occasionally need to adjust the sequence of activities to provide the best possible experience.

3. Cultural Immersion & The Flavors of Sichuan
This journey is a deep dive into Sichuan’s vibrant culture, and that includes its world-famous cuisine. Sichuan food is known for its bold, complex flavors, particularly the unique numbing sensation of the Sichuan peppercorn (málà). While many famously spicy dishes await the adventurous palate, there is also a huge variety of delicious, non-spicy dishes. We encourage you to be open-minded, and your guide will be an expert at helping you navigate menus to find the perfect balance for your taste.

4. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.

  • Payments: China operates on a near-cashless system driven by two main apps: WeChat Pay and Alipay. For convenience and true local immersion, we strongly recommend installing at least one of these apps on your phone and linking your credit card before your departure. Relying solely on cash or foreign credit cards for daily purchases can be very difficult.

  • Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms (like Facebook, Instagram, and X) and websites (like Google and YouTube) is restricted in mainland China. Internet access in remote mountain hotels can also be slower than in the city. Many travelers choose to install a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on their phones and devices before they travel to stay connected as they would at home.

5. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all park entries and travel permits in this region are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.

6. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided in your pre-departure packet. Layering is key, as temperatures can vary dramatically between the Chengdu basin and the high-altitude mountain areas, even in summer. Comfortable, broken-in hiking or walking shoes with good grip are essential for this journey.

6. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. Layering is key, as temperatures can vary dramatically between the Chengdu basin and the high-altitude mountain areas. Comfortable, broken-in hiking or walking shoes are essential.

7. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.

8. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
