A Winter’s Tale is a journey into two distinct and magnificent winter kingdoms. It is a story told in two perfect acts. One is a universe built by man: the magnificent ice city of Harbin, where you will wander through glowing, crystalline palaces. The other is a world sculpted by nature: the legendary China Snow Town, where impossibly deep, soft snow turns a simple village into a landscape from a dream.
This is our most focused immersion into the magic of a northern winter, designed for the traveler who wants to experience the absolute pinnacle of its beauty.

D1: Arrival in the Ice Kingdom (Harbin)
Welcome to Harbin, the magnificent “Ice City” and the heart of China’s winter. Your journey begins upon your arrival at Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB), where our representative will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel. The moment you step outside, you will feel it: the crisp, clean, bitingly cold air that makes this city’s famous ice sculptures possible. It is a feeling of true, deep winter, full of anticipation.
The evening is yours to settle in and acclimate to the bracing, exciting atmosphere. For dinner, you might take a short, independent stroll to find a local eatery for a taste of authentic Dongbei (Northeastern) cuisine. A steaming plate of handmade pork and sauerkraut dumplings (suan cai jiaozi) or a hearty bowl of rich stew is the perfect, warming introduction to the culinary traditions of the North. Your guided adventure will officially commence tomorrow morning.

Day 2: Harbin’s Icons & A Welcome Feast (Harbin)
A packed and exhilarating day of immersion into the “Ice City” begins with a stroll down the historic, cobblestoned Central Street (中央大街). You will admire the unique collection of European architectural styles, a legacy of the city’s international past. Our walk leads to the magnificent, green-domed St. Sophia Cathedral (圣索菲亚大教堂), a stunning symbol of Harbin’s Russian heritage.
The adventure then continues onto the vast, frozen expanse of the Songhua River (松花江), which becomes a city-wide winter playground. Here, you will experience the pure joy of the season with thrilling rides on ice-karts and snow tubes (冰上卡丁车, 激情雪圈). As dusk falls, we enter the main event: the Harbin Ice and Snow World (冰雪大世界). You will step into a breathtaking, life-sized city of castles, pagodas, and palaces carved entirely from blocks of crystal-clear ice and illuminated from within by a dazzling galaxy of colored lights. Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, a feast of classic Dongbei cuisine to warm us after a spectacular day.

Day 3: Alpine Pursuits (Harbin)
Our adventure continues as we take a scenic drive to Yabuli (亚布力), the birthplace of skiing in China and its premier ski resort, renowned for its pristine snow and beautiful alpine scenery. After a hearty lunch, your alpine experience begins.
We have arranged for a two-hour ski lesson with a professional instructor in a small group setting. Whether you are a first-timer or looking to refine your technique, your instructor will guide you through the basics on a gentle slope. All necessary equipment (skis, boots, poles) will be provided to ensure you are comfortable and confident. Afterwards, the choice is yours: you can continue to practice your new skills on the slopes, or you can retreat to the hotel for a well-deserved and soothing soak in the outdoor hot springs, feeling the contrast of the hot, mineral-rich water against the crisp, cold winter air. This evening is free for you to dine at your leisure at one of the resort’s various restaurants.

Day 4: Into the Fairy Tale (Harbin)
A scenic drive takes us deeper into the snow-covered forests to a place that feels like it belongs in a fairy tale: the legendary China Snow Town (Zhongguo Xuexiang, 中国雪乡). After a hearty local lunch, we will explore the village on foot. You will marvel at the iconic “mushroom houses” (蘑菇屋), charming wooden homes whose roofs have been sculpted by meters of soft, heavy snow into fantastical, curving shapes.
You’ll have the chance for a thrilling dog-sledding ride, feeling the crisp air as a team of energetic huskies pulls you through the winter landscape. We will also taste a classic northern treat: a rock-hard, sweet-and-sour candied hawthorn stick (bingtanghulu, 冰糖葫芦) that shatters with a satisfying crunch in the cold. As night falls, your evening is free. You can choose to walk up the scenic boardwalk for a magical, panoramic view over the lantern-lit village, or find a cozy spot next to the blazing-hot stove (huolu, 火炉) in your guesthouse and chat with the friendly local owner.

Day 5: Winter Magic & A Farewell Toast (Harbin)
You will wake up in a world of pristine white, the silence broken only by the soft crunch of snow underfoot. This morning is for creating an iconic and magical memory with the “splashing water into ice” (泼水成冰) photo experience. Your guide will help you time it perfectly: as the sun rises, you will throw a cup of hot water into the frigid air, watching it instantly explode into a beautiful, glittering cloud of ice crystals against the morning light.
After breakfast, we take a charming horse-drawn sleigh ride (马拉爬犁). Bundled up under warm blankets, you will take a final journey through the silent, snow-covered forest, a timeless and peaceful farewell to this fairy-tale village. After lunch, our private vehicle takes you back to Harbin. As our winter’s tale concludes, we gather for a special Farewell Dinner, sharing our final stories over a feast of refined Northeastern cuisine.

Activity Level: Active & Adventurous (Level 3/5)
This journey takes place in extreme winter conditions and is for the traveler with a spirit of adventure. It involves extensive walking at the Ice Festival, often on snow and ice, and includes fun but physical activities like snow tubing and a hike in the Snow Village. A good level of fitness and resilience to the cold are required to fully enjoy the magic of this winter wonderland. -
Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. In Harbin, our standard tours feature excellent 4-star properties with reliable heating. In the China Snow Town, we select the best-available and most charming local guesthouses (mínsù). These offer an authentic experience with clean, heated rooms, but please be aware that they are more rustic and do not have the same service level or amenities as a city hotel. -
Transportation
This journey relies on a private, modern, and comfortably heated vehicle for all movements, including your airport transfers and the scenic drive to the Snow Village. This ensures a warm, seamless, and comfortable experience as you travel through the stunning winter landscapes. -
Joining the Tour
This tour begins and concludes in Harbin (HRB). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Harbin Taiping International Airport on Day 1 for your private transfer. The guided portion of your journey concludes after breakfast on Day 6, which is your day for independent onward travel. -
Passports & Visas
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of departure from China. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. While you are responsible for obtaining your own visa, SinoVistas will provide all necessary supporting documentation, including a formal letter of invitation.
Important Notes
1. A Note on Packing for Extreme Cold
This is a true winter journey into one of China’s coldest regions. Temperatures can, and often do, drop well below -20°C (-4°F), especially at night. It is absolutely essential to be prepared.
Clothing: Layering is key. You will need high-quality thermal underwear (top and bottom), fleece mid-layers, and insulated, windproof/waterproof outer layers (ski pants and a warm winter parka are ideal). Warm wool socks, waterproof winter boots, a warm hat that covers your ears, a scarf or neck gaiter, and insulated gloves are non-negotiable.
Electronics: Extreme cold drains batteries very quickly. We strongly recommend bringing portable power banks and keeping your phone and spare camera batteries in an inside pocket, close to your body heat, when not in use.
2. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility in Winter
Winter travel in the north can be unpredictable. While we make every effort to adhere to the itinerary, extreme weather conditions or heavy snowfall can occasionally impact road access or the operating hours of scenic spots. Your expert Storyteller Guide’s top priority is your safety and comfort, and they may need to adjust the sequence of activities accordingly. Your flexibility and adventurous spirit are greatly appreciated.
3. Cultural Immersion & The Flavors of the North
This journey is a deep dive into the hearty and warming cuisine of Northeast China (Dongbei). This is a food culture designed for the cold, featuring rich stews, savory braised meats, pickled sour cabbage (suan cai), potatoes, corn, and delicious pan-fried dumplings. We encourage you to embrace these comforting flavors that are so different from more familiar southern Chinese cuisines.
4. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.
Payments: We strongly recommend installing WeChat Pay or Alipay and linking your credit card before departure. Cash is more widely used in the Snow Village than in Harbin.
Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Internet access in the Snow Village guesthouse may be slower than in the city. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel.
5. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all park entries and travel permits in this region are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.
6. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.
7. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
