Why this journey? A note from our founder
Some stories are not written in ink, but in ice and snow. The story of Northeast China is a grand saga, a fascinating and complex tapestry woven from fallen empires, unique border cultures, and the profound magic of a true northern winter.
I created The Northern Saga because I believe a journey into this land should embrace its full, epic scope. This is our most comprehensive exploration of the region. You will stand in the melancholic palace of China’s last emperor, immerse yourself in the vibrant Korean culture of the borderlands, and journey to a sacred volcanic lake on the edge of the world.
This grand tour culminates in the two great spectacles of winter: the fairy-tale Snow Village, and the glowing, crystalline universe of the Harbin Ice Festival. This is our invitation to experience the complete, magnificent story of the north.

Important Notes
1. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility & Winter Conditions
Travel in the Northeast during winter can be dynamic and unpredictable. While we make every effort to adhere to the itinerary, extreme weather, heavy snowfall, or icy road conditions can occasionally impact travel times or the operating hours of scenic spots. Your expert Storyteller Guide’s top priority is your safety and comfort, and they may need to adjust the sequence of activities accordingly. Your flexibility and adventurous spirit are a key part of this journey.
2. A Special Note on Changbai Mountain’s Heaven Lake
Viewing the magnificent Heaven Lake (天池) is a highlight of this journey, but it is entirely dependent on real-time weather conditions at the summit. High winds or heavy snow can lead to sudden closures of the viewpoint with no advance notice. While we time our visit to maximize the chances of a clear view, we cannot guarantee it. Please be assured that the beauty of the surrounding volcanic landscape, the waterfall, and the forests is a spectacular experience in itself.
3. Packing & Preparing for Extreme Cold
This is a true winter expedition. Temperatures can drop well below -20°C (-4°F). Being properly equipped is essential for your comfort and safety.
Clothing: A multi-layering system is crucial. You will need high-quality thermal underwear, fleece mid-layers, and insulated, windproof/waterproof outerwear (a warm parka and ski pants are ideal). Warm wool socks, insulated waterproof winter boots, a wind-proof hat that covers your ears, a scarf or neck gaiter, and insulated mittens (warmer than gloves) are non-negotiable.
Electronics: Extreme cold drains batteries at a surprising speed. We strongly advise bringing multiple portable power banks and keeping your phone and spare camera batteries in an inside pocket, close to your body heat, whenever possible.
4. A Culinary Journey Through Three Cultures
This journey is a fascinating culinary adventure. You will experience three distinct cuisines: the hearty, savory stews and corn-based dishes of Dongbei cuisine in Changchun and Harbin; the vibrant, spicy, and authentic Korean food of Yanji, from barbecue to cold noodles; and the unique Russian-influenced dishes found in Harbin’s classic restaurants.
5. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.
Payments: We strongly recommend installing WeChat Pay or Alipay and linking your credit card before departure. Cash is useful in smaller towns, but mobile payment is still king.
Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Internet access in the mountain resort and Snow Village may be slower than in the cities. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel.
6. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all high-speed train tickets in China are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.
7. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.
8. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
