There are places on earth where the land itself feels like an artist’s studio. Where the very soil is a vibrant pigment, and the landscape is a canvas shaped by hands both human and divine. This is Southern Yunnan.
I created A Palette of Clay & Color to be an immersion into this living studio. This journey is a story told through two essential materials: the rich, red clay that forms the earth and is molded into exquisite pottery, and the brilliant color that bursts from the landscape—from the mirror-like rice terraces to a surreal pink sand beach.
We will explore whimsical art towns born from the red earth and stand before vistas painted in a thousand shades of green and gold. This is our invitation to witness a world where the line between landscape and art dissolves completely.

Your Journey, Day by Day
Day 1: Arrival in the City of Eternal Spring (Kunming)
Welcome to Yunnan, the “Province South of the Clouds,” a land of vibrant colors and rich cultural traditions that has inspired artists for centuries. Your journey begins upon your arrival at Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG), where our representative will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel.
The evening is yours to settle in and enjoy the mild, floral-scented air of the “City of Eternal Spring.” For a perfect introduction to the city’s relaxed pace of life, we recommend an independent stroll around the beautiful Green Lake Park (翠湖公园). As dusk falls, you can watch local life unfold—couples dancing, musicians playing traditional instruments, and families enjoying the pleasant atmosphere. For dinner, this is the perfect opportunity to seek out Yunnan’s most famous culinary story: a steaming, aromatic bowl of “Crossing-the-Bridge” Noodles (guoqiao mixian, 过桥米线), a deconstructed soup you assemble yourself from dozens of small plates of fresh ingredients. Your guided Sinovistas adventure will officially commence tomorrow morning.

Day 2: A Lake of Sapphire and Pink & A Welcome Feast (Kunming/Jianshui)
Our artistic exploration begins as we journey to the stunning, sapphire-blue waters of Fuxian Lake (抚仙湖), one of China’s deepest and most pristine freshwater lakes. Here, we will discover a unique natural wonder: the famous Pink Sand Beach (粉红沙滩). You will walk along a shoreline made not of yellow or white sand, but of fine, pink-hued granules, a beautiful and surreal canvas against the deep blue of the water.
From this natural palette, we proceed to a world born from human imagination: the whimsical Yigongfang Art Manor (蚁工坊). You will wander through a fantastic, Gaudi-esque collection of buildings, their curved, organic shapes and intricate details feeling like something from a dream. Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, a feast of fresh, local Yunnan dishes, perhaps including some of the delicious fish from the lake itself, a perfect start to our artistic journey.

Day 3: An Elegant Garden & A Sea of Terraces ( Jianshui/Yuanyang)
We travel to the charming, historic town of Jianshui to visit the magnificent Zhu Family Garden (朱家花园). You will explore this vast, labyrinthine complex of 42 interconnected courtyards, a stunning example of Qing Dynasty residential architecture often called the “View-Grand Garden” of Southern Yunnan. We then visit Beishan Taozhuang (贝山陶庄), a local workshop where you can see master artisans practice the traditional craft of Jianshui purple pottery, known for its unglazed, elegant finish.
Our journey then continues as we ascend into the mountains of the Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces (元阳哈尼梯田), a UNESCO World Heritage site. We will arrive at the Bada (坝达) viewpoint just in time for the day’s spectacular finale. As the sun begins to set, you will witness it transform thousands of water-filled rice paddies into a breathtaking, liquid mosaic of brilliant gold, fiery orange, and deep purple, a true masterpiece of light and landscape.
A Note on the Terraces: The beauty of the Yuanyang terraces is seasonal. The most spectacular “mirror-like” views, as seen in photos, occur from late November to March when the paddies are filled with water. From April to September, the terraces are a vibrant sea of green as the rice grows. Your experience will be beautiful regardless, but different depending on the time of year.

Day 4: Sunrise, Mushroom Houses, and a Forgotten Station (Yuanyang/Mengzi)
An early start takes us to the Duoyishu (多依树) viewpoint, the premier location to witness the ethereal beauty of a Yuanyang sunrise. You will watch in awe as the first rays of light crest over the mountains, slowly burning away the thick morning mist that fills the valleys and revealing the mirror-like terraces below.
We then immerse ourselves in the culture of the Hani people—the artists who sculpted these mountains—with a visit to the Azheke Village (阿者科村), a traditional hamlet of charming, thatch-roofed “mushroom houses.” We will also see the unique Blue Rice Terraces (蓝梯田), whose water takes on a deep sapphire hue due to their specific orientation. From here, we descend from the mountains, our final stop a leap into a different era: the beautifully preserved, French-influenced Bisezhai Railway Station (蒙自碧色寨), a key stop on an old colonial-era railway, its yellow walls and clock tower feeling like a film set frozen in time.

Day 5: An Otherworldly Art Town (Mengzi/Mile/Kunming)
Our final day of exploration is dedicated to one of China’s most unique and imaginative creations. We journey from Mengzi to the Dongfengyun Art Town (弥勒东风韵) in Mile. Here, a collection of bizarre and beautiful buildings, built entirely from local red brick, rise from the earth like giant, surreal sculptures. You will wander through this whimsical artscape, exploring structures that resemble giant termite mounds or wine bottles, a landscape born from a fantastical, Gaudi-esque dream.
After exploring this surreal masterpiece, we begin our scenic drive back to Kunming. As our journey through Yunnan’s living canvas concludes, we will gather for a special Farewell Dinner, sharing our final stories and inspirations over a feast of flavorful local Yunnan dishes.

Day 6: Farewell from the Painted Canvas (Kunming)

We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. In Kunming, our standard tours feature excellent 4-star properties. In the remote Yuanyang region, we select the best-available boutique guesthouses that offer stunning views and local character. This tour begins and concludes in Kunming (KMG). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Kunming Changshui International Airport on Day 1 for your private transfer. The guided portion of your journey concludes after breakfast on Day 6, which is your day for independent onward travel.Passports & Visas

1. A Note on the Hani Terraces: A Seasonal Masterpiece
The beauty of the Yuanyang Rice Terraces is magnificent year-round but changes dramatically with the seasons. It is crucial to set the right expectation for your visit.

Late November – March (The Mirror Season): This is the most famous period for photography. The terraces are filled with water, creating a spectacular, mirror-like mosaic that perfectly reflects the colors of the sky at sunrise and sunset.

April – September (The Growing Season): The terraces are a vibrant sea of lush green as the rice plants grow. This offers a different but equally beautiful pastoral landscape, full of life and agricultural activity.
Your experience will be stunning regardless of the season, but the visual character of the terraces will be distinct.
2. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility
Travel in the mountainous, rural regions of Yunnan can be unpredictable. While we make every effort to adhere to the published itinerary, local conditions such as weather, road access, or farming activities may require your guide to adjust the sequence of activities to provide the best possible and safest experience. Your flexibility is a key part of the adventure.
3. Cultural Immersion & The Flavors of Yunnan
This journey is a deep dive into Yunnan’s incredible culinary diversity. The cuisine here is a mosaic of flavors, famous for its use of wild mushrooms, cured hams, fresh herbs, and even edible flowers. You will experience the sour and spicy notes of Dai cuisine and the fresh, clean flavors of dishes from the central plateau. We encourage you to be adventurous with your palate!

Payments: While mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay are dominant in cities like Kunming, we recommend carrying some cash, as it can be more convenient for small purchases in the rural villages and markets we will be visiting.

Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Internet access in the remote guesthouses of the Yuanyang region may be slower or less stable than in the city. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel.
5. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all park entries and travel permits in this region are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.
6. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. Layering is key, as temperatures can vary with altitude and time of day. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with good grip are essential for the cobblestone streets of ancient towns and the paths around the rice terraces. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also crucial due to the high altitude.
7. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.
8. Solo Travelers
