Why this journey? A note from our founder

There are some landscapes that feel less like a place and more like a painting—a world of misty peaks, serene ponds, and elegant, whitewashed villages that have inspired artists for a thousand years. This is the ink-wash dreamscape of ancient Huizhou.

I created An Ink-Wash Dreamscape because I believe a journey should sometimes be an act of stepping into a work of art. This is a deep, aesthetic immersion into the heart of China’s most picturesque region. It is a story told in two magnificent parts: the awesome, natural masterpiece of the sacred Yellow Mountains (Huangshan), and the exquisite, human masterpieces of the ancient merchant villages like Hongcun and Xidi.

You will ascend into a sea of clouds, wander a labyrinth of cobblestone alleys, and stand before ancestral halls of breathtaking artistry. This is our invitation to travel not just through a place, but through a living, breathing masterpiece.

Signature Experiences on This Path
  • Ascend into a Sea of Clouds
At the magnificent Yellow Mountains (Huangshan), you will ascend by cable car into an otherworldly landscape of dramatic granite peaks, twisted pines, and, if fortune smiles, a vast, ethereal “sea of clouds” filling the valleys below.

  • Step into a Village from a Painting
Immerse yourself in the perfectly preserved beauty of Hongcun, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will stand by its iconic Moon Pond, capturing the flawless reflection of the ancient, whitewashed Huizhou architecture in the tranquil water—a scene unchanged for centuries.

  • Explore the Labyrinth of a Merchant’s Clan
Get lost in the ninety-nine winding, cobblestone alleys of Xidi, another UNESCO gem. This is a journey into the heart of a prosperous Ming and Qing dynasty merchant clan, a living museum of intricate wood carvings and beautifully preserved ancestral halls.

  • Stand Before the Seven Arches of Honor
In Shexian, you will stand in the presence of the magnificent Tangyue Memorial Archways. This grand row of seven stone arches, each one telling a story of virtue, loyalty, or filial piety, is a profound and powerful testament to the Confucian values of ancient Huizhou society.

Your Journey, Day by Day

屯溪老街
Day 1: Arrival in the Land of Ink & Stone (Huangshan)

Welcome to ancient Huizhou, a region of misty mountains and elegant, whitewashed villages that has inspired Chinese artists for a thousand years. Your journey begins upon your arrival at Huangshan Tunxi International Airport (TXN), where our representative will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel.

If time permits, your first immersion into this artistic world will be a fascinating stroll down the historic Tunxi Old Street (屯溪老街). You will walk on its ancient stone-paved lanes, surrounded by beautifully preserved Ming and Qing dynasty shops, many of them still selling the “Four Treasures of the Study”—the brushes, ink, paper, and inkstones that are the tools of the Chinese scholar and artist. For dinner, your evening is free to find a local restaurant to try some classic, hearty Anhui cuisine, perhaps the famous “stinky” mandarin fish, a true local delicacy.

黄山
Day 2: Ascent into a Sea of Clouds & A Welcome Feast (Huangshan)

Today we ascend into a living ink-wash painting. A scenic drive takes us to the base of the magnificent Yellow Mountains (黄山), a UNESCO World Heritage site. From the transfer station, we take a park bus up the winding mountain road, then board the Yuping Cable Car to glide up into the peaks, watching the world fall away below.

From the cable car station, you will spend the day hiking with your guide along breathtaking cliff-side paths. You will gaze out at the famous “sea of clouds” that often fills the valleys, see the iconic, twisted forms of ancient pines clinging to granite cliffs, and visit famous viewpoints like the Yuping Peak area, home to the celebrated “Welcoming-Guest Pine.” We will stay overnight at a hotel on the mountain itself, a unique opportunity to experience its tranquility after the daytime crowds have left. Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, a feast of hearty, local Anhui dishes.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Huangshan

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Welcome Dinner

宏村
Day 3: A Sunrise Spectacle & A Village from a Painting (Huangshan)

If the weather is clear, you will wake before dawn for one of nature’s most spectacular shows: a Huangshan sunrise. From a high vantage point, you will watch in awe as the sun crests over the distant granite peaks, its golden light illuminating the vast “sea of clouds” that often fills the valleys below.

After breakfast, we continue to explore the mountain’s northern vistas, visiting famous spots like the “Beginning-to-Believe Peak” and the “Monkey Gazing at the Sea.” We then take the Yungu Cable Car down the mountain. Our journey continues by private vehicle to the ancient village of Hongcun (宏村), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you will stand by its iconic Moon Pond, capturing the flawless reflection of the ancient, whitewashed Huizhou architecture in the tranquil water, feeling as if you have stepped into a perfect ink-wash painting.

Day 4: The Labyrinth & The Ancestors (Huangshan)

Today we explore two more magnificent UNESCO-listed villages, each with its own unique character. We begin in Xidi (西递), a prosperous merchant village laid out like a giant labyrinth. You will get lost in its ninety-nine winding, cobblestone alleys, discovering beautifully preserved Ming and Qing dynasty homes adorned with exquisite wood carvings that speak to the wealth of the families who lived here.

We then travel to the quieter, more cinematic village of Nanping (南屏), which has served as the backdrop for many famous films, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It is known as the “Museum of Chinese Ancestral Halls” for its stunning collection of eight grand, remarkably preserved clan temples, each one a testament to the importance of family and lineage in ancient Huizhou society. After a day of deep cultural immersion, your evening is free to find a local restaurant for a taste of authentic Huizhou cuisine, perhaps trying the famous “hairy tofu” (mao doufu), a unique local delicacy.

  • Accommodation: Selected 4-Star Hotel in Huangshan

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

鲍家花园
Day 5: The Eight-Sided Town, Archways of Honor & A Farewell Toast (Huangshan)

Our final day is a journey through the region’s grandest legacies. We explore the unique village of Chengkan (呈坎), also known as “Bagua Village” for its mysterious and intricate layout designed according to the ancient principles of Feng Shui, with a labyrinth of lanes connecting its many ancestral halls. We will also visit the elegant village of Tangmo (唐模), known for its serene waterway and beautiful gardens.

We then travel to Shexian county to stand before the magnificent Tangyue Memorial Archways (棠樾牌坊群), a grand row of seven stone arches that dominate the landscape. Each arch tells a powerful story of virtue, loyalty, or filial piety, a profound testament to the Confucian values of ancient Huizhou society. Nearby, we will visit the beautiful Baojia Garden (鲍家花园), home to a world-class collection of exquisite bonsai. As our journey concludes, we will gather for a special Farewell Dinner, sharing our final stories over a feast of exquisite local delicacies.

Day 6: Farewell from a Living Painting (Huangshan)

Having walked among sacred peaks that touch the clouds and through ancient villages reflected in tranquil ponds, we hope you leave with a profound sense of the artistry that infuses this unique landscape.

Essential Information

  1. Activity Level: Demanding (Level 4/5)
This journey is physically demanding and requires a good level of fitness. The exploration of the Yellow Mountains (Huangshan) involves two days of extensive hiking, much of it up and down steep, man-made stone stairways that can number in the thousands. While we utilize cable cars to handle the largest ascents and descents, a high level of stamina is essential to fully enjoy the breathtaking views.

  2. Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. A key highlight of this trip is staying overnight at a hotel on the summit of Huangshan, allowing for sunset and sunrise viewing. In the historic Huizhou villages, we select the best-available charming guesthouses or boutique hotels that offer authentic local character. Please be aware that the amenities and service levels in the mountain and village accommodations will differ from a standard city hotel.

  3. Transportation
This journey is a classic Huizhou road trip, relying almost exclusively on a private, modern, air-conditioned vehicle. This provides the ultimate flexibility to navigate the winding roads between the mountains and the ancient villages, and to travel at a comfortable pace.

  4. Joining the Tour
This tour begins and concludes in Huangshan City (Tunxi). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Huangshan Tunxi International Airport (TXN) on Day 1 for your private transfer. The guided portion of your journey concludes after breakfast on Day 6, which is your day for independent onward travel.

  5. Passports & Visas
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of departure from China. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. While you are responsible for obtaining your own visa, SinoVistas will provide all necessary supporting documentation.

Important Notes

1. A Note on Huangshan: Weather & Views
The beauty of the Yellow Mountains is legendary, as is their notoriously unpredictable weather. The famous “sea of clouds,” sunsets, and sunrises are magnificent phenomena, but they are not guaranteed. The mountains can be shrouded in mist for days at a time, which creates its own beautiful, moody, “ink-wash painting” atmosphere. A spirit of flexibility and an appreciation for the mountain’s many moods are key to a rewarding experience.

2. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility
Travel in the mountainous Huizhou region is subject to local conditions. Your expert Storyteller Guide’s top priority is your safety and enjoyment. In the event of extreme weather on the mountain, they may need to adjust the sequence of hiking routes to ensure your safety and comfort.

3. Cultural Immersion & The Flavors of Huizhou
This journey is an immersion into Anhui cuisine, one of China’s eight great culinary traditions. Huizhou cuisine is known for its hearty, rustic flavors, its emphasis on local mountain ingredients (like bamboo and mushrooms), and its unique preparation methods, such as salt-curing and slow braising. Be prepared for rich, savory dishes that are very different from Cantonese or Sichuanese food.

4. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.

  • Payments: We recommend installing WeChat Pay or Alipay. However, carrying some cash is highly recommended, as it will be very useful for small purchases in the ancient villages.

  • Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Internet access on the summit of Huangshan and in the rural villages may be slower or less stable than in a major city. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel.

5. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. Sturdy, broken-in hiking shoes with excellent grip are non-negotiable for this journey. Layering is also key, as mountain weather can change quickly. It is advisable to pack a smaller, overnight bag for the stay on Huangshan summit, as you will leave your main luggage at the base.

6. Tipping

Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.

7. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
