I created Mythic Guizhou as a fast-paced, high-impact pilgrimage to the heart of this legend. It is a journey designed to immerse you in the raw, elemental power of the land: the thunderous sermon of a great waterfall, the impossible jade-green of a tranquil river, and the silent, mist-shrouded temples that float in a sea of clouds.

Walk Behind a Thunderous Curtain
At the heart of the Huangguoshu Waterfall, one of Asia’s largest, you will not only witness its immense power from afar. We will take you on a path that leads directly behind the main cascade, where you can feel the thunderous roar and misty spray from inside a natural “Water-Curtain Cave.”Float on a River of Liquid Jade

At the summit of the sacred Mount Fanjing, you will witness a true architectural and natural marvel. Two small temples are perched impossibly atop the “Red Cloud Golden Summit,” a split pinnacle of rock connected by a narrow bridge, often shrouded in a sea of clouds.
Your Journey, Day by Day
Day 1: Arrival in the Lush Capital (Guiyang)
Welcome to Guizhou, a province of surreal green landscapes, thundering waterfalls, and vibrant minority cultures. Your journey into this mythic realm begins upon your arrival at Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport (KWE), where our representative will greet you for your private transfer to the hotel.
The evening is yours to settle in and acclimate to the region’s warm, humid air. For a perfect introduction to the city’s unique culinary scene, we recommend an independent stroll to the lively Qingyun Road Night Market (青云路夜市). Here, under a canopy of glowing lights, you can dive headfirst into the local flavors, perhaps trying a plate of Guiyang’s famous crispy fried pork, zao-la-jiao (糟辣角), or some sizzling grilled skewers. It is a vibrant and delicious start to your adventure.

Day 2: The Roar of the Great Falls & A Welcome Feast (Guiyang)
Our adventure begins as we journey to one of China’s most spectacular natural wonders: the Huangguoshu Waterfall (黄果树大瀑布). We will explore the entire scenic area, from the wide cascade of the Doupotang Waterfall (陡坡塘瀑布) to the beautiful grottoes of the Tianxingqiao Scenic Area (天星桥景区). The day’s climax is the great falls itself, where we will take a path leading directly behind the main cascade, feeling its thunderous roar and misty spray from within a natural “Water-Curtain Cave.”
A Note on the Waterfall: The spectacle of Huangguoshu is tied to the seasons. During the rainy season (typically June to August), the falls are at their most powerful and thunderous—a truly awesome display of natural force. During the dry season (winter months), the cascade is more slender and graceful, allowing for clearer views and easier access behind the curtain.
Tonight, we gather for our official Welcome Dinner, a feast introducing you to the unique sour and spicy flavors of Guizhou cuisine.

Day 3: A Realm of Liquid Jade & A Village of a Thousand Homes (Guiyang/Xijiang)
Today is a day of immense travel and breathtaking contrasts. Our journey takes us south to the serene, dream-like beauty of the Libo Xiaoqikong Scenic Area (小七孔). Known as the “Little Seven Arches,” this UNESCO World Heritage site is a wonderland of water. You will walk along forest paths, seeing a chain of crystal-clear rivers, cascading waterfalls, and tranquil pools that glow in stunning, impossible shades of emerald and sapphire.
After immersing ourselves in this tranquil, liquid-jade paradise, our journey continues, climbing into the mountains. We arrive in the evening at the spectacular Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village (西江千户苗寨). As dusk falls, you will be greeted by the unforgettable sight of more than a thousand traditional wooden houses, built on stilts and tumbling down the slopes of a mountain, beginning to light up one by one. Your evening is free to find a local Miao family’s restaurant for an authentic dinner with a stunning view of the glittering village.

Day 4: Ancient Alleys & A River of Time (Xijiang/Tongren)
After a final morning absorbing the panoramic views in Xijiang, our journey continues to the magnificent Zhenyuan Ancient Town (镇远古城). This 2,000-year-old town is dramatically split by the emerald-green Wuyang River, its temples, guild halls, and traditional homes clinging to the cliffs on either side.
We will spend the afternoon exploring its famous “crooked lanes and evil ways” (歪门邪道)—a labyrinth of narrow, winding stone alleyways that are a delight to get lost in. You will feel the echoes of the town’s history as a bustling trade hub on the ancient post road. As evening falls, the town transforms as red lanterns are lit and the riverside buildings are beautifully illuminated. For dinner, your evening is free to choose a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the water, enjoying the magical atmosphere.

Day 5: A Sacred Peak & A Farewell Toast (Tongren/Guiyang)
Prepare for the journey’s spiritual and physical climax as we travel to the sacred Mount Fanjing (梵净山), a UNESCO World Heritage site. We will ascend the main peak by cable car, gliding over a lush, primeval forest. The final approach, however, requires a vigorous climb up thousands of steep, narrow stairways that cling to the mountainside.
The reward is the summit itself: an otherworldly landscape of mist-shrouded karst pillars that rise like islands from a sea of clouds. You will make the final, breathtaking ascent up the Red Cloud Golden Summit (红云金顶), a split pinnacle of rock with two small temples perched impossibly on its peaks, connected by a narrow bridge. Standing here, high above the world, is an unforgettable experience. As our journey concludes, we will gather for a special Farewell Dinner, sharing our final stories and raising a toast to the mythic wonders we have witnessed.

Day 6: Farewell from a Land of Song and Silver (Guiyang)
After a final breakfast, your immersive journey through the rich cultural tapestry of Guizhou officially comes to an end. From the thunderous roar of a great waterfall to the intricate patterns of Miao silver and the ancient, haunting harmonies of a Dong choir, we hope you leave with a deep appreciation for the living, breathing artistry of this incredible land.

This journey is fast-paced and physically challenging, designed for the active and resilient traveler. It involves extensive walking at large scenic areas and, crucially, a vigorous and steep climb of thousands of stairs to reach the summit of Mount Fanjing. A high level of fitness, stamina, and comfort with heights is essential to fully enjoy this rewarding but intense adventure.Accommodation
We believe where you rest is integral to the journey. In the capital city of Guiyang, our standard tours feature excellent 4-star properties. In the more remote locations near the scenic areas, such as Xijiang and the base of Mount Fanjing, we select the best-available comfortable hotels or charming guesthouses that offer local character. Please be aware that hotel standards and amenities in these rural areas will differ from the major city.Transportation
This journey is a classic Guizhou road trip at its heart, relying almost exclusively on a private, modern, air-conditioned vehicle. This provides the ultimate flexibility to navigate the winding mountain roads, to travel at a comfortable pace, and to stop for spontaneous photo opportunities in the beautiful, lush landscapes.Joining the Tour
This tour begins and concludes in Guiyang (KWE). Your guide will meet you at the arrivals hall of Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport on Day 1 for your private transfer. The guided portion of your journey concludes after breakfast on Day 6, which is your day for independent onward travel.Passports & Visas
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of departure from China. A tourist visa is required for most nationalities. While you are responsible for obtaining your own visa, SinoVistas will provide all necessary supporting documentation, including a formal letter of invitation.

1. A Note on Itinerary Flexibility & Rural Travel
This journey ventures into the beautiful, mountainous, and less-traveled parts of Guizhou. This is the heart of its charm, but it also means that travel can be unpredictable. While we make every effort to adhere to the published itinerary, local conditions such as weather, road access, or village events may require your guide to adjust the sequence of activities to provide the best and safest experience. Your flexibility and adventurous spirit are key components of this journey.
2. Cultural Immersion & The Flavors of Guizhou
This journey is a deep dive into Guizhou’s unique culinary landscape, which is very different from other Chinese cuisines. It is famous for its bold sour and spicy (suanla) flavors. You will have many opportunities to try local specialties, from the iconic Sour Fish Hot Pot to various dishes made with local herbs and vegetables. We encourage you to be open-minded and adventurous with your palate!
3. Your Digital Experience in China
To ensure a seamless journey, we recommend preparing for China’s unique digital landscape.

Payments: While mobile payments like WeChat Pay and Alipay are prevalent in cities like Guiyang, it is highly recommended to carry a sufficient amount of cash. In the remote minority villages and local markets we will be visiting, cash is often the easiest and sometimes the only way to pay for small purchases, snacks, or souvenirs.

Connectivity: Access to many Western social media platforms and websites is restricted. Crucially, internet access in the rural guesthouses of Zhaoxing and Xijiang may be slow, intermittent, or unavailable. Many travelers choose to install a VPN on their devices before they travel to stay connected where possible.
4. Passport Information for Ticketing
To ensure a smooth journey, all park entries and travel permits in this region are issued under a strict real-name policy. Therefore, we require a clear, scanned copy of the personal details page of your passport no later than 45 days prior to departure.
5. Packing & Prohibited Items
A detailed packing list will be provided. Layering is key, as temperatures can vary with altitude and weather. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes with good grip are absolutely essential for the cobblestone streets of ancient towns, uneven village paths, and the hike to Tangan. Rain gear is also highly recommended.
6. Tipping
Tipping has become a customary practice for rewarding good service from local guides and drivers in China’s tourism industry. While not mandatory, it is greatly appreciated. A guideline for gratuities will be provided in your pre-departure information packet.
7. Solo Travelers
We warmly welcome solo travelers. You will be paired with another traveler of the same gender for accommodation. If you wish to have your own room, a “Single Supplement” fee applies. Please inquire for the current rate.
